FWIW, MediaElement.js (which I adopted in the interim) does a very good job with HLS files of .m3u8 format.

The MediaElement.js plugin allows specifying a "type=" component after the "src=" specification, so I just specify type="application/x-mpegURL" and it's good to go.

That way, the combination of the "type" specification, and an altenative [mejsvideo] shortcode seem to do the trick.
